Metaverse - In Simple Words - Beginner's Guide
Overview
If you are above 30 years then you may recall how people were unable to clearly understand the concept of internet, until they started using it. Similar is the visualisation of the Metaverse in current scenario.
In 1970’s, when internet, a new form of communication component, was defined, it ignited multitude of speculations amongst technical community about what it would look like and how people would use it. Everyone was talking about it, but few knew what it really meant and how it worked.
Similarly, people are perplexed about Metaverse a whole new form of interaction of humans with digital objects, where many of digital objects will behave as humans.
In simple words, Metaverse is a digital universe equipped with artificial intelligence, where people will use, say VR gears and will interact in 3D digital world with digital avatars or objects.
Following figure might elaborate it a little bit. You will actually feel to be there as one of the characters in the metaverse. E.g., when you turn your head around you will be able to see entire environment and digital characters around you. These digital characters may represent your friends who are playing any game with you, or might be any object (e.g., weapon) which you can grab or use.
By 2024, Metaverse will be in the $ 800 billion market, with technology giants like Meta, Microsoft, Apple, and Google investing heavily to make it happen.
It’s time to find out if it’s a very vague and complex conceptual meaning. So, for those who don’t yet understand what the Metaverse is, there are some experts who break it down. That’s most of us.
So, what exactly is the Metaverse?
The term comes to mind in recent years, but the term “Metaverse” was actually coined by author Neil Stevenson in the 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash. In his novel, Stephenson described the Metaverse as a comprehensive digital world that runs parallel to the real world.
Metaverse is a 3D version of the Internet and the wider computational reach.
When the two technologies (the internet and computers) first appeared, all interactions were mostly text (email, messages, usernames, e-mail addresses). Now it has become more media (photo, video, live stream).
The next enhancement in user interface and user experience is 3D.
Many experts consider the Metaverse to be a 3D model of the Internet. Essentially, a digital place parallel to the physical world, where you spend your digital life. Where you and others have avatars and you interact with them through their avatars.
Obviously, it’s not real at this stage, and won`t become real until people have a single location they can go to get into in a virtual world they could live in.
Actually, the metaverse can be characterised as a 3D version of the internet that is seen as the logical next stage of development, and would ideally be accessed through a single gateway.
In 1990’s, the internet was described as an `information superhighway, but it was more of just a term to refer to a potential future with networked computers rather than an actual highway.
As it develops, the metaverse will also have equivalence to the real world and be much more distributed, democratic, fluid and varied.
While the discourse on defining the metaverse differs from case to case, it is, in the simplest terms, a shared virtual space that is interactive, immersive and hyper-realistic. It also includes your own customized avatars and digital assets that are likely to be recorded on the blockchain.
Perhaps it looks just looks a video game. But, the Metaverse is much larger than video games., The game world already seems to be in its most basic form. For example, in online shooters like Fortnite, users can take their personal avatars to interact with other players’ avatars, or earn cryptocurrencies to unlock avatar costumes.
Perhaps the closest iteration to the planned Metaverse is the game Second Life. This is a simulation game where users can experience virtual reality where Avatar can shop, eat, take a shower, and do anything in real life.
According to engineers, Metaverse takes the virtual reality experience to the next level, allowing users to float in the virtual world and do everything from buying land to hosting parties to marriages through digital avatars.
How to access Metaverse
So how do you access the Metaverse for now? Currently, there is no single gateway to access the Metaverse, but experts suggest buying hardware to truly immerse yourself in the experience. This can range from an affordable $ 10 digital object to a $ 300 Million one. The cost will primarily depend on the immersive experience and paying capacity.
The structure of the Metaverse is now similar to that of the Android Play Store.
There are multiple platforms that offer virtual reality, augmented reality, and augmented reality experiences. These are like different apps that you can download from the app store.
This has spawned multiple tech tycoons that offer a variety of experiences, from games and virtual workspaces to live entertainment and real estate. This includes platforms such as Decentraland, Axie Infinity, Horizon, Sandbox, Fortnite and Roblox.
However, many experts argue that you don’t necessarily need VR glasses to enter the Metaverse.
Accessing the Metaverse without VR gear from your smartphone, tablet, or computer loses its immersive side, but it’s a good way to see what all the hype is.
Usage of Metaverse
Now coming to an important question. What is the actual “use” of the Metaverse?
Given its high-quality forecasts, Metaverse is touted as a major player in the growth of the digital economy. The Metaverse is capable to stimulate the digital economy, and has the potential to become the main growth engine of the world economy.
The Metaverse is already seen as the future of entertainment, fashion, games, and even parties, and I, being an educationist, personally believe that the best use of the Metaverse can be in education sector.
3D-based training is probably much better than training, for example, through zoom, so that students can better understand the flow and connectedness by actually feeling it, and not just by watching, reading and writing about a topic.
Purchasing digital items/objects or virtual land in the Metaverse may be an investment opportunity to multiply your money, but the real value of the Metaverse could be in evolution of the ways to enrich people’s lives.
In real world, while studying, consistently looking onto computer screens might result in the eyes of the students to be tired and it may become difficult to work on the computer. In such cases, the technique and implementation can help, but there’s still some work to be done, such as training a medical robot or setting up an augmented reality to remotely repair a car.
Safety and Precautions
But is it safe to be in the Metaverse?
May be…
Metaverse’s fictitious touchstones, such as Ready Player One and Snow Crash, might lead to give bad experiences.
Next question is, whether it can create a safe and responsible immersive environment. This can be understood with a real incident.
During an interaction in Metaverse, a woman was sexually harassed in the Metaverse and reported “virtually gangbanged.” Digital privacy experts continue to point out that the Metaverse will be the ultimate monitoring tool.
Legal Aspects
“The Metaverse doesn’t just collect data about gaze tracking movements, hand movements, room shapes, etc., and we need to find a legal framework for what happens when we are harassed on a virtual platform.
Metaverse presupposes an implicit trust in technology, just as we rely on Google Maps for directions.
In order to further evolve these technologies, we need to think about all these legal aspects and actively pursue them responsibly.
So, will I be living in the metaverse for a few more years? Some experts believe that “a large portion of the population will somehow be in reverse” by 2030. But despite the current obsession, the idea still needs a lot of work. The first challenge will be accessibility to the necessary equipment. Then there’s the need for interoperability – allowing you to ship virtual items like clothes or cars from one platform to another.
What Next?
Five years from now, you might see people roaming around wearing VR glasses. Or, maybe, you’ll laugh at this article of mine a decade from now, thinking how naive people were to question the rise of the metaverse.
Anyway, my verdict… The Metaverse is here, will stay here and will entirely change the way how money plays the role in major economies. Data, along with the strength of digital flows in Metaverse are going to change lifestyle of next generations.
